Air Travel – The best connections to Fairbanks from all ski regions of the country are via Alaska Airlines. From most major airports in the east, midwest and west you can get to Fairbanks with a single stop and aircraft change in Seattle. There are four daily non-stops between Seattle and Fairbanks. Taking a non-stop between Seattle and Fairbanks can save anywhere from one hour to several hours compared to flying Seattle-Anchorage-Fairbanks. The Fairbanks International Airport is approximately 20-25 minutes from the Birch Hill Recreation area.
Housing – Wedgewood Resort is the official Race Headquarters Hotel for the 2017 SuperTour Finals / Distance National Championships. Team Captains’ Meetings will be held at the Taiga building at Wedgewood Resort. Wedgweood will be a most convenient place to stay. From the hotel the drive to the competition venue at Birch Hill Recreation Area takes only 5-10 minutes. When making reservations, use reservation code USDNC17. You can reach Wedgewood by phone at 800-528-4916 or 907-456-3642.
Meals – Our official host hotel has one-and-two-bedroom suites with kitchens, so that athletes and coaches can prepare meals and eat in their lodging if they so desire. There are also many restaurants throughout Fairbanks and many within a few minutes of the hotel. If you are into Thai food, Fairbanks is acknowledged to be a center of fine Thai cuisine, with more than a dozen Thai restaurants.
On-site costs – Once you have paid your entry fee, there are no additional costs for skiing. Birch Hill Recreation Area is a facility of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department. All aspects of the cross country ski operation are managed by the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks. There is never a charge to ski at Birch Hill.
Waxing – There will be two permanent buildings available for onsite waxing. Both wax areas are very secure and will be locked overnight. If you or your team wish to have a private wax cabin, we can put you in touch with local logistics operation which rents trailers. Any group wishing private wax cabins will be responsible for all costs associated with the wax cabin, including rental, transportation, damage deposit, etc. If you desire to rent a cabin, we will need substantial lead time as it is necessary to do some non-trivial wiring to provide sufficient and dependable AC power to cabins/trailers. These areas are available without charge.
- One area is “The Cave”, located on the ground floor of the Birch Hill Cross Country Ski Center building. The mass start area is approximately 50m from this wax area and the interval start/sprint start area is just over 100m from this wax area.
- The other area is the former Equipment Shed – which we are able to use because we have just constructed a new, more spacious equipment shed. The old Equipment Shed includes two small bays and one large bay for waxing – probably the space equivalent to 4-5 medium-sized wax cabins. The mass start area is approximately 100m from this wax area and the interval start/sprint start area is about 50m from this wax area.
